Love Handles is a popular term meant to describe an excess of fat in a person’s midriff. Presumably, it is meant to describe the area where a lover holds his/her partner when embracing.
Excess fat in the midriff has become more frequent recently, due to sedentary life habits and high calorie consumption. Certain chemicals secreted by the fat cells (Adipokines) contribute to the enlargement of love handles and to the development of insulin resistance and to some inflammatory processes in different areas of the body.
Very often, diet and exercise can reduce, to some degree, this bulge. This is always desirable, inasmuch as being overweight can predispose a person to multiple serious difficulties, including cardiovascular and inflammatory problems as well as a predisposition to diabetes.
Naturally, maintaining a desirable weight, is helpful in the long term persistence of the results. However, when diet and exercise fail to reduce the love handles, even in the context of normal weight, certain noninvasive and minimally invasive procedures can achieve excellent results:
- Coolsculpting (R) (Cryolipolysis) – noninvasive
- Tumescent Liposuction – minimally invasive
- Laser assisted Liposuction – minimally invasive
- Laser heating alone (Lipotherme) in milder cases – minimally invasive
