Sagging skin of the face, eyelids, neck (jowls), limbs, abdomen, and breasts is a common accompaniment of aging, weight loss, and sun damage. It is caused by loss of support, mainly collagen and elastic tissue, in the affected areas.
What causes sagging sking
Sagging skin has several causes. The main cause of sagging skin is aging: mainly sun induced aging but also chronological aging. Usually there is a combination of both.
Loss of weight can contribute to sagging of the skin. However, unless the weight loss is severe, the sagging due to weight loss is mild. Following Liposuction, the treated area may show some sagging for a variable amount of time. At Lakeview Dermatology, we try to prevent sagging by using a Laser heating device: Lipotherme, which tightens the skin during the procedure, while at the same time facilitating the liposuction by melting the fat.
There are some rare congenital conditions that may cause sagging of the skin. These are familiar to Dermatologists, who will not recommend cosmetic treatment (Thermage, Refirme) if they suspect a congenital problem.
Sagging Skin Treatments:
In the past, surgery was the only treatment option. With the advent of Thermage™ (radiofrequency), we are able to offer an effective non-surgical, non-invasive alternative to treat sagging skin. The 16 cm tip of the new Thermage NXT has greatly reduced the treatment time and and has increased the patient satisfaction rate to 80%. With the new technique (multiple passes at lower power) the pain of the Thermage procedure has been greatly diminished.
